From the Foster: We don't think this whole loving-home thing is totally new to Calcifer, but it sure has been a while since he has experienced one. Now that he is with us, he is just soaking it all in. This sweet little guy loves to love and loves to be loved. He always wants to please which makes him a super fast learner! Well, that and all the yummy treats. Calcifer came to AAHMN extremely malnourished but has since been learning all about the different doggy foods and treats that exist out there. He is also learning that he will get his meals every single day, so he doesn't have to race to gulp it all down. Because he didn't always have a sure meal, he occasionally shows some resource guarding and impulsivity around food. Feeding him separately from other dogs and watching out for counter-surfing are the best preventive measures (he responds well to "off unless he already has the food he was after).

Calcifer does a great job in his kennel. He stays there when we are away from the house and sleeps there at night. He is pretty much sleeping through the night now, but will start to fuss if he has to go to the bathroom or it is time to get up in the morning. Once he is up, there is no telling what kind of stories he will share! He loves to sing when he is excited (like its time for food or a walk) and will generally chat with you a bit throughout the day. He does pretty well on his leash, unless he sees a squirrel or other sidewalk snack-but hey, we are all still learning! I think as he gains weight and strength, he could be a great jogging partner. He loves to wrestle and play chase in the backyard with the other big dogs in his foster home, but I don't think dog siblings are a must in his forever home. He also loves to play with his humans and all of his toys! He is still learning how to politely ask to play, so little kids may not be the best fit with Calcifer. Ultimately though, this little guy deserves the best out of the rest of his life, so if you don't mind saving a spot on the couch for him to cuddle with you at the end of the day, he will return the favor a thousand times over with love.
